Electricity 101

Five things worth understanding

A short written version of each topic is below. The videos are on YouTube, and they are not required to read this page.

  • Electrical Grid 101 : All you need to know!

A grid is the system that carries electricity from where it is made to where it is used. Generation is the power station. Transmission is the high-voltage lines that move large amounts of power across the island. Distribution is the lower-voltage network that brings it down a street and into a building. A wall socket is the last step of that chain.

On Saint Lucia the stations, the lines and the substations are LUCELEC's. This note describes that chain. The video linked with it is hosted on YouTube.

  • Renewable Energy 101

Renewable energy is electricity from a source that is not used up as you generate: sunlight, wind, water, or geothermal heat. A diesel plant burns fuel that has to be shipped in, and the cost of that fuel is what moves the fuel charge on a bill.

A solar or wind plant has no fuel to buy. It only generates while the sun or the wind is there, so the rest of the grid still has to supply the island when it is not.

  • How Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant Works

A photovoltaic panel turns sunlight into direct current. An inverter turns that into alternating current, which is the form the grid uses. From the inverter the power passes through transformers and a substation and joins the same network as power from the diesel stations.

La Tourney is LUCELEC's solar plant. This note is about how a plant of that kind works. It is not a transcript of the video.

  • What Is the Smart Grid?

A smart grid adds measurement and control to the wires. Smart meters record use through the day rather than one reading a month. Switches and sensors on the distribution network can tell the control room where a fault is, and sometimes isolate it, without waiting for a call.

LUCELEC is rolling out smart metering and distribution automation. This note is that idea, in writing.

  • Smart Grid - The Big Picture

For a country, a smarter grid is about running the whole system with better information: where power is being used, where a line is down, and how much renewable generation is coming in. It does not replace the poles and wires.

It changes how quickly the utility can see a problem and respond, and how renewable plants can sit alongside the diesel stations that still carry the island when the sun is down.
